Early-bird registration is now open for the 5th international European Social Survey (ESS) Conference being held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 8-10 July 2024.

Users of our Conference management platform, ConfTool, can now register for the three-day conference: Addressing grand societal challenges cross-nationally: Investigation, innovation and insights from 20 years of data.

Registration for the conference before 31 May 2024 is available at the discounted rate of €150 per person. A limited number of half-price student tickets are also available.

This allows participants access to all keynote speeches and parallel sessions during the conference, lunch and refreshments on all three days, as well as the welcome reception and conference dinner.

Pippa Norris (Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University) will deliver the first keynote speech of the conference on the cultural roots of democratic backsliding.

ESS director, Professor Rory Fitzgerald, will deliver a keynote speech and host a panel discussion about the self-completion future of our survey.

The recipient of this year’s Jowell-Kaase early career researcher prize will be invited to deliver the third keynote of the conference.

Over the three days, there will be seven parallel session slots, featuring 56 different sessions on a wide range of topics related to our survey.

This includes a range of methodological topics, including data quality, mode of data collection, respondent engagement, translation, measurement error and questionnaire design.

Substantive sessions will be held on COVID-19, democracy and politics, digital social contacts, discrimination, environment, health and wellbeing, immigration, inequality, institutional and social trust, justice and fairness, labour market, social isolation, values and more.

There will also be sessions in which analyses of data collected via our most recent web panel - CROss-National Online Survey 2 (CRONOS-2) - will be presented on a range of topics as well as substantive sessions with a geographic focus.

More than 250 research papers that analyse our data from the last 20 years (2020-22) and/or examine relevant survey methods are currently scheduled to be presented.

The 5th International ESS Conference will be held at ICS - University of Lisbon and ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal, from Monday 8 until Wednesday 10 July 2024.
