The aim of this paper was to place the ESS within the context of related European research projects, both substantively and methodologically, and to outline the ESS’s distinctive features. By ‘related projects’ in this context, we mean other large-scale, cross-national, quantitative surveys in Europe whose aim is to measure, interpret and understand changes over time in people’s opinions, attitudes, values and beliefs.
