It is examined whether the anti-church policy of the state socialist countries in Eastern Europe and in East Germany has had secularizing effects visible up to 2008. Data are taken from the European Social Survey's rounds 1-4. It is shown that the enforced secularization has had stronger negative consequences on church membership, church attendance, frequency of prayer, and religious self-categorization in East Germany than in the Eastern European countries.
