Abstract

The chapter provides a state of art report on the topic based on existing research evidence. It discusses the conceptual and historical background of class analysis and of class mobility in sociology. Various class schemas (EGP, Wright, Esping-Andersen, ESeC) are presented derived from the ESS data 2004/2005. The EGP class schema is examined in detailed manner from the perspective of welfare typology of countries, of cohort differences. Validation of the class schemas is also discussed. Class mobility is reviewed from the perspective of changes over time with respect to converging and diverging trends.
