Abstract

The article reviews diverse Western and Russian approaches to ethnicity and interethnic tensions. Survey research within the Russian Federation is probed for indications of a developing pan- Russia, "Rossiiskoe," civicoriented identity. While interethnic prejudices and fears of migrants are exposed, so are attitudes that provide a basis for building a "polyethnic," civic society.
