Abstract

During recent years there has been a lively discussion about the so called Easterlin Paradox both among scientists and in media in general. The main result of Easterlin’s studies was that economic growth does not generate more happiness and welfare for people in general. If this is true it has of course significant consequences for the choice of goals for economic policy. In this paper we make an attempt to study the relationship between changes in income and changes in welfare using data from the six first waves of ESS. The results seem to give some support for the critique of the paradox.
