Abstract

There is no straightforward solution to the comparative measurement of demo-graphic and socioeconomic variables in international surveys. The paper will present the ISSP bottom-top procedure, where national background variables are bridged into a comparative data file, and the top-bottom ESS approach, where the background variables are defined in a source questionnaire. The advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are discussed. The paper ends with an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the two different approaches and points out possible ways of improving the measurement of background variables in international surveys.
