As a reaction to the new regional finance law, the president of Madeira’ Regional Government since 1978 announced his dismissal and the option for following elections anticipation. He intends to stand for a candidate in order to remain in power until 2011. In a communication to radio and TV, the regional leader said that this elections, held probably in June, are the opportunity for Madeira inhabitants “to show to the people and the world that they repudiate the wickedness and injustice practiced against them” and added that the wickedness was the approval of the regional finance law by the “Lisbon socialist power, with the complicity and betrayal of Madeira people socialists”. This new law draws “at least until 2014, around 450 million euros” and “this attack purposively coincides with a similar reduction of funding from the EU […] each one of you understands the meaning to the regional economy of such a reduction on the circulating money”.
